Flexibility is a measure of how easily the sole of the shoe bends at the ball of the foot. The normal walking motion rolls the foot from heel to toe so an excessively stiff sole would inhibit the natural motion of the arches and place extra strain on them and your calf muscles. A well known consumer testing organization recently tested the flexibility of several brands of walking shoes in the laboratory and from personal evaluations and concluded that with the exception of a couple models no longer offered for sale that all major walking shoe brands rated very good. The two brands that rated excellent for flexibility were Saucony (again) and New Balance. Flexibility is determined by the shoe sole material and by the thickness of the sole. If your walking route is over rough ground you may want to trade off a little flexibility for thick-sole protection against the bruise you could get from a sharp rock.

I get a multitude of compliments when I wear these shoes and they are a nice addition to my wardrobe. They get a bit uncomfortable as the day goes on, the straps that go around the foot cut into my feet but it is not unbearable. I am on my feet for over 8 hours a day and most shoes wear into the “uncomfortable” zone at some point. As I wear the shoes the discomfort is less noticeable.

I am a little lazy about fashion, so it helps that I love these shoes so much that they’re the only shoes I wear. I have probably gone through 6 pairs of these (first the 991s, and now the 992s now that the 991s have been fazed out). It takes a few walks to break them in. They feel tight around the ankles and a little high at the heel. But once they’re broken in, they are extremely comfortable. And I love the neutral color.

I do moderate walking 6 times a day in these and wear them for everything else. Despite all that usage, they last at least a year. I’m kind of in a routine now where I wear the old ones for exercise and the new ones as my regular shoes. (Each pair is in use for 2 years!) I am a big nerd, but I love these shoes and it works. They are pricey. Never buy them at the NB store or at the mall. The best deals are online. Amazon is great!

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t high heels been around for a very long time?

I remember learning to wear high heels when I was thirteen years old. While my mother was at work, I dug through the collection in her closet, selected my favorite pair - four inches high, white with a little black ribbon that went all the way around the opening of the shoe - and I taught myself to walk in them. True, my first attempts were more clomps than delicate steps, but I kept at it. Every Saturday that my mother was away, I was developing my calves, thighs, ankles, knees and feet, on my own! I didn’t pay anyone.

True, I did manage to give myself a lovely life-time scar from prancing about in dangerous areas, such as near heating vents on the floor easily flipped up by the toes of pointy shoes; however, my scar was borne of where I chose to practice, not the practicing in and of itself.

I am one of those women who wears high heels with relative comfort. I don’t take them off in public, even if they’re killing me - and who are we kidding? Wearing high heels hurts. Even the gym where these amazing classes can be had makes no promise that your feet wont still hurt. They do state what most high-heel-wearing women already know: it hurts less the more used to them that you are, but they are never without pain. My method of endurance came from a positive affirmation gleaned from Donna Karan’s advice in a Dry Idea deodorant commercial: “Never let them see you sweat.” I applied that advice to the endurance needed for wearing high heels. It worked for me for then, and its still working now.

But a class? Unbelievable. Had I but known what a great money-making plan this would be, I could have been charging whole classrooms full of my junior and senior high peers!

Classes for wearing high heels. What else can we take classes on? How to put on a pair of pantyhose? How to sit in a chair or how to hold a pencil? Oh wait - those last two have been done. We called those specialized classes, Kindergarten.

I guess I’m just being nostalgic, remembering the days when we learned standard lessons in standard ways. But if people want to part with their hard-earned money, I’m thinking I might hold classes on how to watch T.V.

Embellishments
Embellishments are being seen on pants and shirts alike. Lots of shine is being used and popular fabrics include satin and charmeuse. Hardware details are popular on tops and are used on many types of jackets. Gems and sparkling accents can be found on necklines of tops and around pockets.

Patterns
Right now, houndstooth checked patterns are popular in tops and dress pants. Plaid fabrics are also being used in form-fitting modern outfits. Keller anticipates that these types of patterns will remain popular into the new year, but more geometric patterns will begin to be integrated into fashion lines.

Jackets
Shorter, cropped jackets are popular and can be worn on weekends, at work, or when getting dressed up. An A-line style has a bit of a vintage feel because of the slight flare at the bottom, and is growing in popularity in many fabric options. These jackets complement a variety of body types as well. Shiny patent leather will be a popular fabric in short jackets as well as trench coats.

Dresses
Women embraced the elegance of flowing skirts and beautiful fabrics as dresses gained popularity in 2007. Keller says the dress trend will continue into 2008 but will incorporate other elements that are popular such as bold patterns, complementary designs and shiny embellishments.

Shawls
Ruanas are a type of shawl that is reminiscent of a poncho. Keller notes that these will be popular in 2008 and will feature ruffle details. Traditional ruanas are often made from heavier material, but fashion lines will feature lighter fabrics that are great for indoors or mildly cool weather.

“Fashion 2008 will be about style along with comfort. Bold colors and patterns will get noticed and complementary shapes and designs will make everyone look their best. Acquiring several key pieces can update a whole wardrobe in a snap and put you on the road to fashion-forward thinking in the new year,” adds Keller.
